“What whispers rise from this weathered stone?” That’s the question to ask yourselves as we stand before the Shaku Suigan Bosho. This is the tomb of Priest Suigan in Osaka. It is located in the southeastern part of Nakagawa Park.

Shaku Suigan Bosho is the final resting place of a remarkable man. He was born in old Nakagawa Village in 1684. Suigan invested his own money to develop the village. He was a social entrepreneur also named Yoshitomi Yatarouemon.

Born with a compassionate heart he was a wealthy landlord. Sadly he had no children. He took an adopted child but the child died early. Feeling the impermanence of life he became a priest. He shaved his head and took the name Suigan.

After embracing Buddhism he dedicated himself to social work. He helped build 11 stone bridges and repaired roads in nearby villages. In 1739 Suigan donated all his fields to the village. This was about 4800 square meters of land.

The income from the fields was used to maintain shrines and temples. It also aided poor villagers. Suigan passed away in 1745.

A portion of the land he donated is still managed as the Nakagawa Town Property Ward. It contributes to local welfare projects even today. His legacy continues.

Even now Suigan’s virtue is sung in the East Nakagawa Elementary School song. The lyrics include “hometown treasure. Suigan’s spirited heart. We embrace it and learn with all our heart.”

So take a moment to reflect on the life of Shaku Suigan Bosho. He was a man who gave everything for his community. His tomb stands as a symbol of generosity and compassion. It is a reminder that one person can make a real difference.
