The imposing walls of Zongzheng Mansion stand before you. Feel the weight of history.
Zongzheng Mansion in Beijing is a significant Qing Dynasty structure. It served as the residence of the Zongzheng. The Zongzheng was the head of the imperial clan. This powerful official oversaw the vast extended family of the emperors. His duties were significant. He managed land grants and titles. He was responsible for the education of the imperial family members.
The mansion’s construction started during the reign of the Shunzhi Emperor. Prince Fu’erhe was the first Zongzheng to reside here. He was a prominent figure in early Qing politics. His efforts influenced the development of the mansion. The construction however went over budget. Prince Fu’erhe exceeded the allotted funds. He used bronze birds and animals in its decoration. This extravagant use of materials led to his dismissal and a heavy fine.
Later renovations included a beautiful garden. This garden was called the “Ning Garden”. It was known for its beauty and its elegant design. The garden sadly no longer exists. However the name Ning Garden survives in local accounts. Legend attributes its design to the renowned landscape artist Li Chenggu.
The mansion changed hands many times. It became the property of the Catholic Church at one point. Later it served as the campus of Peking University. Today it houses the Ministry of Education. Parts of the original structure remain. These remnants remind us of the mansion’s rich history. The original layout was divided into east middle and west sections. The east section was the main section of the palace. It included the main gate and large halls.
Many buildings have since been added or removed. The original garden Ning Garden disappeared completely. Some structures are gone. Other buildings were replaced by newer ones. Yet the spirit of Zongzheng Mansion persists. It stands as a testament to power. It also demonstrates the long and complex history of Beijing.
Today you see the Ministry of Education where once emperors and princes walked. You stand on ground that once echoed with imperial decrees. Zongzheng Mansion is a silent observer. It continues to witness the ebb and flow of life in this great city.
