Hidden amidst the bustling streets of Kyoto, Dōchō-ji Temple beckons with a history as layered as the ancient city itself. Dōchō-ji, meaning “Temple of Enlightenment,” stands as a testament to a unique collaboration. This Dōchō-ji Temple isn’t the original. That temple, built in 917, fell into ruin sometime after the Muromachi period. This Dōchō-ji is a reconstruction, a vibrant echo of its predecessor. The original Dōchō-ji was founded by two powerful figures: Fujiwara no Michiakira and Sugawara no Kiyotoshi. Michiakira, a high-ranking military commander and Imperial Prince, joined forces with Kiyotoshi, a scholar and government official. They built Dōchō-ji to honor the six virtues and dispel the six vices, a noble pursuit in the tumultuous Heian period. The temple’s very name, Dōchō-ji, reflects this partnership, combining the first characters of Michiakira and Kiyotoshi’s names. The original temple housed a precious artifact, a wooden statue of Jizo Bosatsu, carved during the Muromachi period. This statue is now a national treasure. While the original temple may be lost to time, the bell (a national treasure) originally cast for Dōchō-ji in 917 still survives. It provides a tangible link to the temple’s founders and their vision. The inscription on the bell tells of Dōchō-ji’s founding and its namesake. Today, Dōchō-ji, though a reconstruction, serves as a quiet reminder of a powerful partnership and a dedication to virtuous living in ancient Kyoto.
