What secrets does the Tongzhou District Museum hold? We stand before a building that has worn many faces. The Tongzhou District Museum began its life as the Three Officers Temple during the Qing Dynasty. It was renovated in 1673. The temple housed statues of deities. These deities represented heaven, earth, and water.

In 1923, the Universal Moral Society repurposed the decaying temple. They built a pseudo-classical activity center. This place became known as the “Wanzi Huiyuan”, or “Myriad Character Society Hall”. Its symbol, the character “wan” (meaning myriad or ten thousand), adorned the building. Then, in 1935, the puppet East Hebei Anti-Communist Autonomous Government took over. This unfortunate turn marked a period of Japanese occupation. The Wanzi Huiyuan became a hub for anti-Japanese activities.

The building saw further transformation in 1964. It became the “Dongshan Restaurant”, but this venture was short-lived. After the Eleventh National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the old county’s cadre bureau occupied it. Finally, in the spring of 1991, the building began its transformation into the Tongzhou District Museum. It officially opened on January 1, 1992.

The Tongzhou District Museum’s collection focuses on the history of Tongzhou from the Neolithic period to the present. It has a special focus on the Grand Canal culture. The museum boasts colorful murals and an antique atmosphere. The “Eight Scenes of Tongzhou” painted within its walls is a particularly eye-catching display. In the courtyard, a circular flower bed surrounded by turquoise rocks and carved dragons adds to its serene beauty. An ancient evergreen tree grows within the circle, a symbol of the museum’s enduring presence.

Today, the Tongzhou District Museum continues its mission. It collects, organizes, preserves, researches, and exhibits artifacts related to Tongzhou’s rich history. It plays a vital role in educating the public about patriotism and local history. The Tongzhou District Museum’s journey through time reflects the resilience and adaptability of this historic place.
