“Imagine a time capsule, frozen in stone for over 1,300 years.” Right before our eyes stands the Yamanoue Stele, a testament to ancient Japan. This unassuming andesite boulder, almost untouched by human hands, holds the oldest known inscription written in Chinese characters using Japanese grammar. It dates back to 681 AD, the Asuka period. The inscription tells a personal story. A monk named Chūri-no-hōshi erected the stele in memory of his mother, Kurome-no-toji. She was laid to rest in the adjacent burial mound, a fascinating structure known as the Yamanoue tumulus. This kofun, as these ancient Japanese burial mounds are called, is special. Unlike most others, we know who was buried here and when. The Yamanoue Stele and tumulus offer a rare glimpse into ancient Japan. They remind us that even across millennia, the human need to honor loved ones remains a powerful force.
