The imposing red brick facade stands before you. This is the Far East Mission Church Precious Virtue Church. Its history is rich and layered like the intricate carvings found in ancient temples.

Built in 1912 the church began as a small chapel. It was the dream of Reverend and Mrs Wen Xiangbo. They were missionaries from America. They established a presence in Guangzhou. They purchased land on Niu Ma Lu street. Their small chapel was called the Holy Saviour Church.

The church grew. More missionaries arrived. In 1929 the Far East Mission joined forces with the South China Mission. The church was renamed the Far East Mission Church Precious Virtue Church. A grander building was erected. It included a seminary a nursery and rooms for the missionaries.

The church became a center of the community. It offered education and refuge. But its story isn’t without hardship.

World War II brought destruction and peril. During the Japanese occupation the church faced threats. A significant portion of its property was seized. It was given to the Red Cross Hospital for use as a makeshift facility. The missionaries were imprisoned but many survived.

After the war the church slowly rebuilt. It faced further challenges during the cultural revolution. It eventually was administered by the Guangzhou Municipal Christian Council. The building itself was repurposed at times. Sections were rented out for offices. The sanctuary and other areas served different functions.

Today the Far East Mission Church Precious Virtue Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of its community. It is a Guangzhou landmark. It stands as a symbol of the city’s rich history and enduring spirit. It is a place of worship but it also stands as a museum of sorts. A silent observer of a century’s worth of changes. Its bricks contain stories untold. Stories of hope perseverance and faith. Look closely. You can almost hear the whispers of the past echoing within its walls.
