Forgotten emperors and silent stones. What secrets does the Forbidden City hold?

The Forbidden City stands before us. It is a testament to China’s rich history and imperial power. For over 500 years it was the heart of the Chinese empire. Twenty-four emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties called this place home. They ruled from within its walls. Let’s step back in time and explore the stories.

Construction of this massive complex began in 1406. It lasted for 14 years. A million workers toiled to build the Forbidden City. Precious Phoebe zhennan wood was brought from faraway jungles. Huge marble blocks came from quarries near Beijing. The floors of major halls were paved with golden bricks. These bricks were baked in Suzhou.

Imagine the emperors walking through these courtyards. They performed ceremonies and made crucial decisions. The Forbidden City was more than just a home. It was the ceremonial and political center of China.

The complex boasts 8,886 bays of rooms. Legend says there are 9,999 rooms. The Forbidden City is the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. UNESCO recognized its importance by declaring it a World Heritage Site in 1987.

Access to the Forbidden City was strictly controlled. Only the emperor, imperial family, and eunuchs were allowed inside. Unauthorized entry was punishable by death. The name “Forbidden City” reflects this exclusivity. It was a world apart from the rest of society.

The Forbidden City is divided into two main sections. The Outer Court was for ceremonial purposes. The Inner Court was the Emperor’s residence. Here the Emperor and his family conducted the day-to-day affairs of state.

The Hall of Supreme Harmony dominates the Outer Court. It is the largest wooden structure in China. Emperors held court here. They discussed important matters of state. Intricate decorations adorn the hall. A caisson with a coiled dragon sits in the ceiling’s center.

Walk through the Inner Court and discover the Palace of Heavenly Purity. This was the Emperor’s official residence. The Hall of Mental Cultivation became the Emperor’s de facto residence later on.

Empress Dowager Cixi also held court from here. The Palace of Earthly Tranquility was the Empress’s residence. The Imperial Garden offers a tranquil escape.

Notice the yellow glazed tiles on most roofs. Yellow is the color of the Emperor. The Pavilion of Literary Profundity has black tiles. Black symbolizes water and helps prevent fire. The statuettes on the roof ridges represent the building’s status. The Hall of Supreme Harmony has ten statuettes, the highest number.

Today, the Forbidden City is under the care of the Palace Museum. The museum houses an extensive collection of art and artifacts. These treasures come from the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The Forbidden City has influenced Chinese architecture and art for centuries. It remains a symbol of Chinese culture and history. Its grandeur and historical significance continue to inspire awe and wonder. Take a moment to appreciate the lasting legacy of the Forbidden City.
