“Did the waves sound different in 1394?” a child’s voice chirped beside me. We stood on Jiaochangwei Beach, the sand soft beneath our feet. This beach, nestled within the Dapeng Old Fortress area in northeastern Shenzhen, holds a special place. It’s the only beach directly connected to a village in Shenzhen. Jiaochangwei has witnessed centuries of change, a living tapestry woven with the threads of time. Back in 1394, this very stretch of sand served a different purpose. The Dapeng Fortress was new, a sentinel against pirates. Jiaochangwei Beach was a training ground. Soldiers drilled here, preparing for battles on land and sea. Their movements, once echoing across the shore, are now just whispers in the wind. But the beach remembers. Over time, Jiaochangwei Beach transformed from a military site into a haven of tranquility. The rhythmic crash of waves replaced the clang of swords. Today, it draws people seeking respite from the city’s hustle. The soft sand invites relaxation, while the view of the ocean provides a sense of calm. In more recent times, Jiaochangwei Beach experienced a renaissance. Around 2009, small, charming guesthouses began popping up, ushering in the “Minsu era.” By 2015, over 350 guesthouses dotted the area. They offer a variety of styles, from traditional Chinese to Japanese, Korean, and even garden and classical themes. These guesthouses, built from renovated traditional homes, seamlessly blend with the surrounding environment. Imagine waking up to the sound of waves lapping against the shore, stepping out to breathe in the fresh sea air. Jiaochangwei Beach offers a unique experience, a blend of history, nature, and modern comfort. It beckons those seeking a slower pace, a taste of the simple life, a connection to the past. It is a place where the whispers of history mingle with the laughter of children playing in the sand, where the echoes of soldiers’ drills are replaced by the gentle rhythm of the waves. It is Jiaochangwei Beach, a timeless treasure on Shenzhen’s coast.
