“A hidden gem awaits us.” The tale of Chozenni begins in Osaka’s bustling heart. This serene temple offers a tranquil escape from the city’s vibrant energy.

Chozenni is a Jodo sect temple. It stands as a testament to Osaka’s rich cultural heritage. Founded between 1573 and 1591 by Yuze Sha Storage Eiyo Shonin, Chozenni has a compelling history.

During the Summer Siege of Osaka in 1615, Chozenni faced upheaval. The second head priest fled with his disciples to Daigawa. They sought refuge in Goshoji Temple, a branch temple in Ogaki mound. Juzei, carrying the principal image of Amida Nyorai on his back, also escaped.

Chozenni was rebuilt in the current location in Higashi. This reconstruction was led by Juzei.

Chozenni also fosters connections with the city of Lianyungang in China. Wang Hongxi, chairman of the Art Association of Lianyungang, presented the temple with a painting. The painting is a folding screen called “Sangokushi Shozo Zu”. Keiro Tonomura also contributed with “Gendai Jigoku Gokuraku Zu”.

Within Chozenni’s grounds stands a stone monument. It marks the site of the Chozenni well. This well was once called “Mizu-chozu.” Hideyoshi renamed it “Sensho-mizu”. Ieyasu later called it “Kogai-mizu”.

The well’s water was renowned. Sakai brewers used it for sake production.

The well was originally located on the grounds of present-day Kumanodai Elementary School. Only the well curb remains within the temple grounds today.

In spring, Chozenni transforms. Over thirty cherry trees bloom creating a spectacle.

Chozenni is known as a cherry blossom spot. These trees are over thirty years old.

To reach Chozenni, take a short walk from Nagai Station on the Nankai Koya Line. It is a seven-minute walk.

Chozenni invites you to experience its beauty. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Let us reflect on the temple’s journey through time.
