Is winning luck something you desire? Then let me introduce you to a place where the very name speaks of triumph: Katsuō-ji Temple. It is a Buddhist temple north of Osaka.

Katsuō-ji Temple’s story begins long ago. Buddhist priests Zenchū and Zensan built a small hut here in 727. Later, in 765 CE, the Miroku-ji temple was erected.

Emperor Seiwa gave Katsuō-ji its name. “Katsu” means winning. The Emperor believed prayers here helped him regain his health. He named it “the temple that helps triumph.”

But there’s more to Katsuō-ji than just its history. The temple was burned in 1184 CE. Hideyori Toyotomi rebuilt the Main Hall and Temple Gate.

Today, Katsuō-ji is known for “winner’s luck”. People flock here seeking success in all endeavors. This includes work, studies, business and sports.

One of the most striking features of Katsuō-ji is its connection to Daruma dolls. These dolls are a symbol of good luck. People buy Daruma dolls hoping to obtain “winner’s luck.”

The dolls at Katsuō-ji are called kachi-Daruma or winning Daruma. Legend says a wish written on a Daruma doll will come true. Write your goal on the doll’s bottom. Write the steps to achieve it on its back. Pray and paint in the doll’s right eye. Keep your goal in mind.

Take the Daruma home and display it. Let it motivate you. When your goal is achieved, draw in the other eye. Then return the Daruma to the temple.

The temple grounds are filled with Daruma dolls. They are tucked into every nook and cranny. These dolls signify wishes fulfilled.

Katsuō-ji’s gardens offer beauty in every season. Cherry trees bloom in spring. Alpine roses and hydrangeas follow in summer. Autumn brings the most spectacular views. The surrounding area bursts with red and yellow leaves.

The sound of sutra chanting fills the air. The scent of incense wafts through the temple. Beautiful vistas surround you. Katsuō-ji is a treat for the senses. Perhaps it will even grant your wishes. Katsuō-ji is also the 23rd temple in the Kansai Kannon Pilgrimage.
