Sadako Kujō, later known as Empress Teimei, once graced this very spot. It was May 21, 1919. Empress Teimei’s visit to Kyoto included a stop at Ninna-ji Temple, marked by this stone monument. The inscription commemorates Empress Teimei’s visit and rest here during her trip. She was in Kyoto for the Silk Weaving Expo. Empress Teimei, consort to Emperor Taishō, played a significant role in modernizing the Imperial Household. She was the first official wife of an emperor or crown prince to give birth to the official heir in over 150 years. Her son, Hirohito, would later become Emperor Shōwa. While her husband suffered from ill health, Empress Teimei actively shaped imperial life. She was a patron of the Japanese Red Cross Society and a devout follower of both Shinto and Nichiren Buddhism. Her influence extended beyond social causes. Empress Teimei is known to have quietly dissented against Japan’s involvement in World War II. This stance may have created friction with her son, Emperor Hirohito. This quiet act of defiance showcases her strong will and commitment to peace. Empress Teimei, a woman of “enlightened constancy”, left a lasting legacy. Her visit here in 1919 serves as a reminder of her presence and influence during a pivotal time in Japanese history. As you continue your journey through Kyoto, remember the remarkable woman who paused here, Empress Teimei.
