“Why June 6th?” you might ask. That date is key to understanding the history of Toyonaka Municipal Nishioka Elementary School. Today we will explore the story of this school. We will uncover its journey and its role in the community.
Toyonaka Municipal Nishioka Elementary School is known locally as “Toyonaka Shiritsu Nishioka Shogakko.” Its story begins in April 1967. The school first opened within Toyonaka Municipal Higashioka Elementary School. It was the 25th elementary school established in Toyonaka City.
Initially the school had only 72 students. At that time the area around Senri was developing rapidly for the Osaka Expo in 1970. The bamboo forests were cleared. The number of students increased accordingly at Toyonaka Municipal Nishioka Elementary School.
By 1976 the school had grown to 1125 students. It became a very large school. However the population aged in the Senri district. The number of children decreased. By 1999 student numbers dropped to 167. Each grade had only one class.
Later the construction of new homes and apartments led to a rapid increase in students. As of May 2023 there were 664 students enrolled at Toyonaka Municipal Nishioka Elementary School. The school faced aging buildings. In 2017 a new school building was completed. The old school building was demolished.
In November 2017 the school celebrated its new building and its 50th anniversary. From 2020 for three years the open design of the classrooms helped with ventilation during the pandemic. This feature would be remembered.
The school has a song. It was composed in 1972. Ito Sachie wrote the lyrics. The music was created by the school’s music club.
Currently the principal of Toyonaka Municipal Nishioka Elementary School is Meguro Shu. As of 2024 the school has 614 students in 27 classes. The school promotes ICT education to support student learning.
Each year on June 6th Toyonaka Municipal Nishioka Elementary School celebrates its founding. The school is closed on this day. Students enjoy a holiday. The school cherishes its history. It continues to move forward with the community.
