Slipping beneath the waves, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel is a marvel of engineering. It’s a key part of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. This link is a bridge-tunnel system that spans the Pearl River Delta, connecting Shenzhen and Zhongshan. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is an impressive feat, boasting a total length of 49.7 kilometers. The tunnel itself stretches for 6.7 kilometers. Imagine eight lanes of traffic flowing beneath the sea. This tunnel isn’t just long, it’s the world’s longest two-way eight-lane immersed tube tunnel. It’s made up of 32 massive tube sections and one final joint. The tunnel is part of a larger project, including the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge. The bridge holds the record for the world’s longest span fully offshore steel box girder suspension bridge, with a main span of 1666 meters. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link drastically reduces travel time between the two cities to under 30 minutes. It has become a vital artery in the Pearl River Delta, carrying an estimated 100,000 vehicles daily. The project opened on June 30, 2024. It has experienced some initial congestion issues. Despite these challenges, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link stands as a testament to modern engineering and the growing connectivity of the Pearl River Delta region. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link has truly transformed travel in this part of China.
