Kannon-ji Temple. A place shrouded in mystery, where even the entrance can be elusive. Some say Kannon-ji Temple was once a grand temple. It fell victim to the ravages of war, burning to the ground. Later, it was rebuilt during the Edo period. This rebuilt Kannon-ji Temple stands before you now, a testament to resilience. The main gate is a striking feature, exuding a palpable sense of history. This gate is the most prominent remnant of the Edo-era reconstruction. A stone inscription near the gate reads, “No entry with alcohol or meat”. This refers to Buddhist dietary restrictions. Interestingly, this inscription is a common sight at Soto Zen temples like Kannon-ji. The temple holds a sacred object, the Kannon statue, a hidden treasure rarely revealed. This statue is so revered it remains a secret, only displayed once every fifty years. Inside the grounds, you’ll also find a Konpira Shrine. Kannon-ji Temple also houses one of the three remaining Hyakumanto pagodas from Hozan-ji Temple. These pagodas were originally commissioned by Empress Komyo to quell a rebellion. Each of the ten major temples at the time received 100,000 miniature pagodas. Only Hozan-ji has preserved a significant number. The one at Kannon-ji Temple provides a fascinating glimpse into history. It features an inscription made by the temple’s founder, Shokado Shojo. The pagoda’s remarkable condition, given its age, is truly astonishing. While Kannon-ji Temple may not boast extensive grounds, its unique blend of Buddhist and Shinto elements creates an intriguing atmosphere. The temple’s intriguing history and hidden treasures offer a unique cultural experience.
