Surely you’ve wondered how Zen Buddhism found its way to Japan. Here at Kennin-ji, we stand at the very cradle of Zen in Kyoto. Kennin-ji Temple claims the esteemed title of Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple.

Founded in 1202 by the monk Eisai, Kennin-ji is more than just old. Eisai, a pivotal figure who brought Zen Buddhism and tea cultivation from China. Imagine Eisai returning from his travels. He sought to establish a place of enlightenment. This temple became that place.

Initially, Kennin-ji embraced a mix of Zen, Tendai, and Shingon practices. Under the eleventh abbot, Lanxi Daolong, it transitioned to a purely Zen institution. Dogen, founder of the Soto sect, also trained here.

Kennin-ji suffered damage over the centuries from wars and fires. It was rebuilt in the 16th century. Buildings were donated from other temples, including Ankoku-ji and Tofuku-ji. Further reconstruction occurred during the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras.

The Abbot’s Quarters, a gift from Ankoku-ji in 1599, still stands. The Dharma Hall was built in 1765. A tea house, designed by Sen no Rikyu for Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587, graces the grounds. Notice the Imperial Messenger Gate, dating back to the Kamakura period. Arrow marks on the gate whisper tales of battles past.

Today, Kennin-ji has fourteen subtemples and about seventy associated temples across Japan. It serves as one of the head temples of the Rinzai Sect of Japanese Buddhism. It ranks third among Kyoto’s five great Zen temples.

Don’t miss the Twin Dragons ceiling painting in the Dharma Hall. Created by Koizumi Junsaku in 2002, it commemorates the temple’s 800th anniversary. This mural measures 11.4 by 15.7 meters. It was painted in a former elementary school gymnasium.

Seek out the Abbot’s Quarters and the Dharma Hall. Explore the tea house and the Imperial Messenger Gate. The pristine white karesansui dry gravel Zen garden invites contemplation. The dragons painted on the roof of the Hodo Hall are really impressive.

Inside, admire the dragon paintings on the sliding doors. Notice the gilded screen depicting the wind and thunder gods. These works reflect Kennin-ji’s rich artistic heritage. Fujin, the wind god, carries a bag of winds. Raijin, the thunder god, brings lightning.

Kennin-ji offers a serene escape from Gion’s lively streets. As you stroll through the grounds, consider the monks who walked here centuries ago. Their quest for enlightenment shaped this sacred space. Let the temple’s peaceful atmosphere inspire your own journey. Kennin-ji connects us to the heart of Zen Buddhism.
