What if bridges could talk? What stories would they tell, what secrets would they whisper? Here at the Sanjō Ōhashi, or Sanjo Bridge as it is commonly known, we stand at a crossroads of history. This bridge, spanning the graceful Kamo River, isn’t just a way to get to the other side. It’s a link to the very soul of old Japan. It is hard to imagine in our modern age, but for centuries, the Sanjō Ōhashi marked the grand finale for travelers on two of Japan’s most important routes: the Nakasendō and the Tōkaidō. Imagine the weary travelers, their journeys finally ending right here where we stand. The Sanjō Ōhashi has seen it all. While its exact origins remain shrouded in the mists of time, records tell us that the mighty warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered its repair in 1590. Imagine the bridge then, likely a wooden structure, so different from the concrete edifice of today yet still a steadfast presence. Look closely and you might spot a historical marker on the southwestern side. It points out a scar on one of the bridge’s giboshi, those onion-shaped ornaments found on bridges and shrines. Legend has it that the gash was made by a sword during the famed Ikedaya Incident. The original inn stood nearby, a silent witness to that dramatic event. The Sanjō Ōhashi stands today as a testament to Kyoto’s enduring spirit, a silent sentinel watching over the flowing river and the city it calls home.
