“Did you hear about the artist who called this temple home?” I ask. Prepare to step into the story of Kotokuji Temple. It is also known as Isseizan Kotokuji. Locals affectionately call it Gaho-dera Temple.

Kotokuji’s story began in 1625. It was founded by the priest Iyo Shonin. He was the fifth head priest of Kinryuzan Daitokuji Temple.

The main hall you see now is from the Meiji era. It served as a temporary structure. The temple’s mountain gate is older. It dates back to 1785.

The artist Gaho Noson lived here for three and a half years. That was starting in 1754. He devoted himself to painting. Gaho befriended local artists. These included Chikkei of Kotokuji. Also, Gyoho of Shinsho-ji, and Ryoha of Muryoju-ji. Because of Gaho’s connection, locals nicknamed it Gaho-dera Temple.

Inside the temple grounds, find a stone monument. It honors Gaho’s love for Kotokuji. The monument features verses by Gaho. They are carved by Koto Kawatou. He was a disciple of Masao Kason.

Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine Gaho Noson here. Picture him painting. He found peace and inspiration in this temple. The temple became his sanctuary. Now, it is a place of artistic remembrance.

Let’s appreciate this connection. We honor the legacy of Gaho Noson at Kotokuji Temple. A place where art and history intertwine.
