Was this perhaps once the elegant mountain villa of an esteemed nobleman? Seiryo-ji Temple, also known as Saga Shaka-do, doesn’t immediately reveal its past. Yet, history whispers through the trees. This serene Buddhist temple in the Saga district of Kyoto holds the echoes of a life that mirrored fiction. Minamoto no Toru, a figure whose life is believed to have inspired the legendary Hikaru Genji of “The Tale of Genji”, once resided here. After his passing, Seiryo-ji was erected in 895, a testament to his memory and a replica of China’s revered Wutai Shan. Today, people come from all over to witness the temple’s treasures. The star attraction? A wooden statue of a youthful Shaka Nyorai. Brought from China by the monk Chonen, this national treasure isn’t just revered, it’s unique. Hidden within its structure are silk models of human organs, a secret revealed only in 1953. The statue, with its black pearl eyes and crystal ear studs, embodies the artistic influences of Western India, a testament to the interconnectedness of faith and beauty. As you stand before this magnificent statue, imagine the artisans, the travelers, and the monks who have made their pilgrimage to Seiryo-ji, their stories now sewn into the very fabric of the temple. Their presence lingers, a testament to the enduring power of faith and artistry.
