Listen closely. The very stones of Shitennō-ji whisper secrets. This isn’t just any temple. It’s said to be the first Buddhist temple in Japan. Established in 593 AD by Prince Shōtoku. A man of profound faith in a time when Buddhism wasn’t widely embraced.

Prince Shōtoku envisioned Shitennō-ji as more than a place of worship. He saw it as a center for civilization. He wanted a temple that would advance Japanese society. That’s why Shitennō-ji wasn’t just a temple. It included a school. It had a hospital and even a pharmacy. This Shika-in or ‘Four Institutions’ aimed to elevate the lives of the Japanese people. Three of these institutions existed within the temple walls during the Kamakura period.

Imagine the scene. Korean carpenters from Baekje. They journeyed to Japan bringing their skills. They helped build this magnificent complex. One of them founded Kongō Gumi. It became the world’s oldest company. A testament to the enduring legacy of Shitennō-ji. It lasted until 2004 when it was absorbed by Takamatsu Construction Group.

Look around you. The present buildings are largely from 1963. A reconstruction after the ravages of time and war. But they stand as a tribute to the temple’s resilience. A five-story pagoda. A golden Kondō housing a Kannon statue. Three gates under a covered corridor. The Deva Gate. The Western Gate. And the Eastern Gate. All part of the original complex.

Even now you can participate in ancient rituals. In the Kameido hall are 7th-century turtle-shaped stoneworks. They were used in water rituals. Today they’re used to honor ancestors. People write their names on wooden sheets and float them on the water. A modern continuation of ancient practices.

Every 21st of the month a lively flea market unfolds here. You can find all sorts of treasures. Secondhand clothes antiques handicrafts. Even old kimonos. A unique blend of ancient spirituality and modern commerce. A testament to the living heart of Shitennō-ji. This temple. This place. It’s more than just stones and wood. It’s a living history a cultural treasure and a spiritual haven in the heart of Osaka. A place where history and tradition meet in a vibrant and beautiful expression. A place that invites you to reflect. And perhaps even find your own piece of serenity amid its bustling atmosphere.
