Saifuku-ji Temple. A name whispered with reverence, steeped in history and shrouded in local lore. Here we stand before Saifuku-ji, in Iwatsuki Village, part of Chiba Prefecture. The temple’s mountain gate bears its name proudly. The characters for “Saifuku-ji” grace the left side. Look closer at the base. You’ll see a weathered, almost forgotten statue of Tatchitsubosumi. This detail speaks to the temple’s age and connection to the community.

Saifuku-ji belongs to the Shingon sect of Esoteric Buddhism. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. The temple has a rich history, dating back to 1832. The temple was established in the fourth month of that year. It was built by devout female practitioners, suggesting a strong community presence from its very inception. Originally, the temple may have gone by a different name. This adds a layer of mystery to Saifuku-ji’s story, hinting at a past waiting to be rediscovered.

The temple grounds hold a special significance. The six-sided grave marker of Iwatsuki Gozen Yasuyuki, a key figure in Saifuku-ji’s narrative, can be found here. The marker is a direct link to the past. The very ground beneath our feet holds traces of Iwatsuki Gozen’s legacy. The main hall and the reception hall stand side by side, with the main hall on the right. The layout itself tells a story. The temple complex extends to the left, its foundations marked by a noticeable earthen mound.

The story of Iwatsuki Gozen Yasuyuki is one of loyalty and tragedy. He served the Chiba clan. Upon his lord’s death, he followed in death, an act of profound devotion. The land around Saifuku-ji then fell into disrepair and neglect. This period of decline only adds to the sense of reverence we feel today. It reminds us of the cyclical nature of history. Out of decline, new life often emerges. Saifuku-ji was reconstructed in the second year of the Taisho era, 1913. This marked a turning point in the temple’s history, a resurgence of faith and community spirit.
