Kyoto’s Seikanji Temple whispers a tale of love, longing, and the search for enlightenment. Nestled near the bustling Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Seikanji offers a tranquil escape. It’s a branch of Chishakuin Temple, holding within its moss-covered walls echoes of a tragic love story between Emperor Takakura and Shogyochikyoku, immortalized in “The Tale of the Heike”. Seikanji’s Kanameishi stone offers a panoramic view of Kyoto, spread out like a fan. Legend says wishes whispered upon this keystone come true. During the Edo period, this area thrived with travelers between Kyoto and Otsu, teahouses lining the paths. Today, Seikanji remains a peaceful haven. A small, dimly lit path connects Seikanji to Kiyomizu-dera, known as “Uta no Nakayama” or “middle mountain of poetry.” This path holds a unique story. A monk named Shin-en, captivated by a beautiful woman, asked her for directions to Kiyomizu-dera. She responded with a poem, questioning his sincerity. Shin-en, ashamed and realizing his spiritual shortcomings, dedicated himself to studying sutras. This encounter gave the path its poetic name. Following in Shin-en’s footsteps, the path offers a glimpse into old Kyoto. A stone monument marks the way, inscribed with “Seikanji Temple, in the middle of a song mountain.” The rustling leaves and quiet atmosphere create a space for reflection, a stark contrast to the lively Kiyomizu-dera. Seikanji Temple, though smaller than its famous neighbor, holds a unique charm. Its history, interwoven with poetry and spiritual awakenings, offers a different perspective on Kyoto’s rich tapestry of stories.
