“Did you know that Kyoto is home to more than one Nishigamiji Temple?”

We stand before one such sacred place. This Nishigamiji Temple is located in Fushimi Ward. Another Nishigamiji Temple resides in Higashiyama Ward. These are distinct temples. Each has its own history and character.

Nishigamiji Temple is a Jodo sect temple. It is also known as Aburakake Jizo. Its mountain name is Yukeizan. The temple’s院 name is Chiun’in. The main deity is Amida Nyorai.

Legend says that Kukai founded this temple. Kukai is also known as Kobo Daishi. He was a monk of the Shingon sect. The temple was originally named Chiun’in. It belonged to the Shingon sect.

Later, Ryogen renovated the temple. Ryogen was a monk of the Tendai sect. He renamed it Nishigamiji Temple. The temple then became part of the Jodo sect.

The Aburakake Jizo statue is made of stone. People pour oil on it while praying. This is believed to grant wishes. The statue shines with a dark luster due to the oil.

Matsuo Basho’s haiku monument stands north of the Jizo hall. The haiku reads “Waga koromo ni fushimi no momo no shizuku seyo”. This translates to “On my robe, drops of Fushimi peaches”. Basho visited the temple. He composed this poem. It is said he visited while being accompanied by a monk who was associated with Nishigamiji Temple.

The Nishigamiji Temple we see today was founded in 1590. Its founder was named 天正. The temple’s 法人 number is 2130005000121. It has a rich history. It is a testament to Kyoto’s enduring spiritual traditions.

As you explore Nishigamiji Temple consider the layers of history. Think about the monks who walked these grounds. Imagine the countless prayers offered here. This temple is a place of peace. It is a place of contemplation. It’s a place where the past and present meet.
