Journey with me back to the 7th century. Emperor Tenchi decreed the construction of a grand temple. This temple, Seigan-ji, originally graced the ancient city of Nara. Imagine its towering presence amidst the nascent capital. Now, fast forward to the 13th century. Seigan-ji embarked on a pilgrimage of its own, relocating to Kyoto’s Ichijo-ogawa district. Another leap through time brings us to 1591. The powerful warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi reshaped Kyoto’s landscape. Seigan-ji found its final resting place in Sanjo-Teramachi, where it stands before you today. Here, at Seigan-ji, a profound parable unfolds within its serene gardens. “The Two Rivers and the White Path,” a teaching from the Tang dynasty monk Shan-tao, illuminates the path to enlightenment. Picture two rivers: one, a raging inferno of human anger, the other, a treacherous torrent of greed. Between these perilous currents lies a narrow, white path, leading to the Pure Land of Amida Buddha. Seigan-ji’s garden masterfully embodies this parable. Observe the central stream. Its left side, tinged with red, represents the fiery river of anger. The right, shaded blue, symbolizes the watery depths of greed. A stone bridge arches gracefully over the stream, the embodiment of the white path to salvation. On the far side, three majestic stones stand in a triad, representing Amida Buddha and the compassionate bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi. At Seigan-ji, stones whisper ancient wisdom. The garden becomes a canvas, painted with the hues of enlightenment. This is more than just a garden; it is a journey of the soul, a testament to the enduring power of faith.
