Spanning across the Pearl River Delta, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge emerges as a modern marvel. It reduces travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan to a mere thirty minutes. This colossal project stands as a testament to Guangdong’s engineering prowess. It offers innovative solutions to global transportation challenges.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge is not just a bridge. It is a cluster project integrating a bridge, an island, a tunnel, and an underwater interchange. Spanning approximately 24 kilometers, this intricate design showcases a seamless blend of engineering brilliance. It pioneers industrialized and intelligent construction methods. The project overcame numerous technical hurdles. It led to the development of 15 world-first core materials, key technologies, and major national equipment.

Considered the world’s largest and longest sea passage in the Greater Bay Area the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge faced extreme conditions during construction. High temperatures, humidity, salinity, and frequent typhoons tested the limits of engineering. Yet, it stands tall. It has the world’s largest offshore span suspension bridge. This reinforces China’s leading position in offshore large-span suspension bridge construction.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge boasts ten world records. Its largest span for an offshore steel box girder suspension bridge measures 1,666 meters. The navigation clearance height reaches 76.5 meters. Its offshore suspension bridge anchors contain approximately 344,000 cubic meters of concrete. It also aced the resistance test with the world’s highest wind speed for a suspension bridge at 83.7 m/s. The bridge withstood a maximum vibration test wind speed of 83.7 m/s. Impressive!

The bridge’s underwater tunnel is equally remarkable. It is the world’s longest bi-directional eight-lane underwater immersed tube tunnel. The tunnel stretches 5,035 meters long. It comprises 32 segments and one final joint. Each standard segment involved pouring 29,000 cubic meters of concrete. That totals 910,000 cubic meters. A new composite structure was proposed for the tunnel. This featured a bi-directional eight-lane standard section. It also has a bi-directional ten-lane widened section.

Notably, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge features the world’s first underwater highway interchange. An underwater interchange including the airport interchange. On the east artificial island of Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge, China’s first underwater interchange for a highway is located. The west artificial island serves as a transition point between the sea bridge and underwater tunnel.

The bridge opened to traffic on June 30, 2024. Shenzhen created inter-city bus lines between it and Zhongshan. In its first month, there were over 3 million vehicle crossings.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge represents a significant achievement. It is a testament to human ingenuity and determination. As you stand here, consider the remarkable engineering and innovation that made this bridge possible. It connects not just cities but also dreams and aspirations. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge serves as a crucial link. It is the segment of a 100-kilometer “Golden Inlet” A-shaped transportation network around the Pearl River Estuary. A passage crucial to economic development and people’s livelihoods is now open.
