“Where are we going?” I hear you ask. Today we’re exploring the area around Nishimukō Station. It is a station with a surprising past. Nishi-Mukō Station is more than just a transport hub. It whispers tales of ancient Japan.

Nishi-Mukō Station first opened its doors on November 1, 1928. Back then it was called Nishi-Mukōmachi Station. The Shinkeihan Line was extended that day. It ran from Takatsuki-machi to Kyoto Saiin.

The name changed on October 1, 1972. The town of Mukō became a city. So Nishi-Mukōmachi Station became Nishi-Mukō Station. This change reflects the area’s growth.

But there is more to the story. In 1978, something remarkable happened. Construction workers built an underground passage. This became an archaeological dig. They unearthed ruins of Nagaoka-kyō. This was Japan’s capital from 784 to 794. Even earlier artifacts were found there. Imagine discovering a piece of history beneath your feet. The daily commute gained a whole new perspective.

Nishi-Mukō Station has two side platforms. They serve two tracks. An underground passage connects them. This passage also functions as a public road. It links both sides of the station. A partition separates the inside and outside.

In 2013, the station got a number. Station numbering was introduced to all Hankyu stations. Nishi-Mukō Station became HK-78. In fiscal year 2019, the station served 12,493 daily passengers. That is a lot of people passing through this historic ground.

Think about the people who have passed through Nishi-Mukō Station. They went to work or visited family. Maybe they were just exploring Kyoto. Each person adds to the station’s story. Nishi-Mukō Station stands as a testament to time. It connects the past and present. It moves people from place to place.
