Carved into the stone of the Fudaraku Sanso Sojiji Stele a poignant story unfolds. Before you stands a testament to faith resilience and filial piety. This is not just a stele. It is a living narrative. It whispers of a father’s unwavering love and a son’s enduring devotion.

The Fudaraku Sanso Sojiji Stele marks the founding of Sojiji Temple in Kyoto. Established in 879 AD it’s a significant site for the Kozen Mountain True Word Sect. The temple’s origins are deeply entwined with the legend of Fujiwara no Yamakaze.

Yamakaze a prominent figure in Heian period Japan served in the Imperial Court. While traveling on official business he witnessed a fisherman catching a large carp. Inspired by this Yamakaze purchased the carp. He released it into a river. This act of compassion led him to found the temple.

The stele itself is a magnificent wooden carving. It stands 75.4 centimeters tall. It depicts Yamakaze’s son Fujiwara no Yamakaze. He’s shown riding a carp. This depicts his rescue from a perilous river journey. This journey was undertaken at his father’s behest. The stele also features images of a virtuous woman and a rain treasure child. These figures symbolize protection and good fortune.

The original temple buildings were unfortunately destroyed by fire during the Tenbun era 1573-1593. They were later rebuilt in 1603 by the Toyotomi Hideyori. This act demonstrates the continued importance of Sojiji Temple throughout Japanese history. The current temple grounds boast a variety of structures including a main hall a medicinal herb gold hall and a gate.

The Fudaraku Sanso Sojiji Stele isn’t just a historical marker. It’s a symbol of the profound connection between a father and son. It’s a story of sacrifice and unwavering devotion. It serves as a timeless reminder of the enduring power of faith and family. As you gaze upon its weathered surface allow yourself to be transported back in time. Experience the emotions that shaped this remarkable legacy.
