A majestic tree stands before you. This is Tako no Matsu the Octopus Pine. Its name evokes images of a mythical creature. This is not just any tree. It’s a piece of Osaka’s history.

For centuries Tako no Matsu graced the banks of the Nakanoshima River. It was a landmark. People came from far and wide to see it. Its branches spread wide like the arms of an octopus. This gave it its unique name.

The original Tako no Matsu thrived for many years. It was a favorite subject of ukiyoe woodblock prints. Travel guides featured it too. The tree was even decorated with a sacred rope during New Year’s celebrations. Wealthy lords maintained the tree. They spent a significant amount of money on its care. Sadly it died near the end of the Meiji Period. A part of its trunk remains. It’s now preserved at Osaka University of Education.

But the legend of Tako no Matsu lives on. In 2004 a new tree was planted. This new Tako no Matsu stands as a symbol of Osaka’s enduring spirit. Though not in its original location it carries on the tradition. It reminds us of Osaka’s vibrant past.

This new Tako no Matsu stands as a testament to the city’s resilience. It’s a reminder of a bygone era. It’s a living legacy. It continues to inspire awe and wonder. It reminds us of the enduring power of nature and the human spirit. Take a moment to appreciate this remarkable tree. It’s a piece of Osaka’s soul. Remember its history. Let it inspire you.
