Lin Zexu’s name echoes through history. Here, at the Humen Tiger Gate, stands the 864e95e8950053169e2672477eaa5ff57891 Plaque, commemorating a pivotal moment in China’s fight against opium. The year was 1839. Opium, imported by British traders, had ravaged China, creating widespread addiction and social unrest. The Daoguang Emperor, determined to end this scourge, appointed Lin Zexu as Imperial Commissioner to oversee the destruction of the illegal opium. Imagine the scene here at Humen. Over 20,000 chests of opium, seized from British traders, were brought to these shores. Lin Zexu, a staunch opponent of the opium trade, oversaw the dramatic destruction of the drug. Instead of burning the opium, which could have allowed addicts to recover remnants from the ashes, Lin devised an ingenious method. Large stone-lined pits were dug here, by the Pearl River. The opium was soaked in a mixture of water, lime, and salt. This chemical reaction dissolved the opium, rendering it useless. The contaminated water was then flushed out to sea with the receding tide. This event, the destruction of opium at Humen, marked a turning point. It signaled China’s defiance against foreign powers and the devastating effects of the opium trade. The 864e95e8950053169e2672477eaa5ff57891 Plaque serves as a permanent reminder of this courageous act. It stands as a testament to Lin Zexu’s unwavering commitment to his country and his people. It also symbolizes the beginning of the First Opium War, a conflict that would reshape China’s relationship with the West. As you stand here, before the 864e95e8950053169e2672477eaa5ff57891 Plaque, remember the weight of history it carries, a potent symbol of resistance and a pivotal moment in China’s past.
