“Quiet” doesn’t even begin to describe the serenity you’ll find here at Rengeji Temple. This Tendai sect temple offers a tranquil escape from Kyoto’s busier tourist spots. Rengeji Temple, also known as Lotus Flower Temple, is more than just a beautiful place.

Let’s journey back to the early Kanbun period between 1661 and 1673. Imaeda Chikayoshi, a retainer of the Kaga clan, rebuilt Rengeji Temple. It had been destroyed during the Onin War in the 15th century. He chose this northeastern corner of Kyoto as its new home.

Today, Rengeji Temple is known for two distinct features. First, its unique stone lanterns have conical tops, favored by tea ceremony experts. Secondly, its stunning temple garden surrounds a deep pond.

The Rengeji Temple garden is a masterpiece by Ishikawa Jozan. He was an Edo-era Renaissance man skilled in poetry, calligraphy, tea ceremony, and garden design. Jozan employed the “chisen kaiyushiki” style. This landscaping approach features a strolling path around the water. The path winds through a thick grove of maple trees.

While Rengeji Temple attracts visitors year-round, autumn is when it truly shines. The maple leaves transform into vibrant red hues. Visitors flock here to witness the temple’s “koyo” or autumn colors. Imagine sitting on the temple porch, gazing upon Ishikawa Jozan’s creation. The colorful leaves reflect in the calm pond waters creating a breathtaking scene.

Many travelers describe Rengeji Temple as a place of calm. Some say it’s the perfect antidote to the crowded temples elsewhere in Kyoto. Visitors appreciate the quiet atmosphere. They find peace contemplating life while watching the koi swim in the pond. Others say it’s their favorite place in Kyoto. They value the respectful ambiance and the staff’s helpfulness.

Even on a hot summer day, Rengeji Temple offers a zen-like experience. You might find yourself alone in the garden. You can soak in the scenery, silence, and nature. During fall foliage season, the shoin pillars act like a picture frame. This frames the exceptional view of the pond garden.

So, take your time as you wander through Rengeji Temple. Absorb the peaceful atmosphere and appreciate the beauty. This little temple is a true gem. It will leave you feeling refreshed.
