In a quiet corner of Kyoto, nestled within the grounds of Fujinomori Shrine, stands a silent sentinel from a tumultuous past: the Mongolia Stele. This unassuming stone monument, the Mongolia Stele, marks a fascinating chapter in Japanese history. The Mongolia Stele we see today was erected in 1919. But it commemorates a much older event. According to a historical record, a wooden marker once stood near this very spot. It was said to mark the burial place of the head of a Mongolian general. In the year 781, the “Mongolian force of a different country” invaded Japan. They were repelled by the brave Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. The general’s head was taken as a trophy of war and interred here at Fujinomori Shrine. Although the original marker is long gone, the Mongolia Stele serves as a tangible reminder of this historical clash. It reflects the complex history of conflict and cultural exchange between Japan and the wider world.
