“Lost atop a hill, cradled by eucalyptus trees, lies the Lianhua Temple,” I began, my voice echoing slightly in the hushed air. “Lianhua Mountain Temple, not to be confused with its near namesake by the Kunming Zoo, offers a unique experience, a blend of the new and the ancient.” We’re standing at the foot of Heye Shan, where the city noise fades and the rustling of leaves takes over. This Lianhua Temple is relatively new. You won’t find centuries-old plaques detailing its history. Instead, you’ll find freshly lacquered red pillars and gleaming white walls, a testament to its recent construction. Inside, the silence is broken only by the soft padding of a small dog and the occasional bark of its larger, chained companion. The main shrine houses a golden Sakyamuni Buddha, flanked by Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta. Copies of the famous arhat statues from Bamboo Temple line the walls. A friendly nun, the sole inhabitant, encourages you to explore the complex. Admire the hand-carved wooden screen in the canteen, a touch of the old amidst the new. Venture beyond the temple walls into the surrounding eucalyptus forest. Discover hidden paths, some leading to traditional Yunnan mountainside graves adorned with incense and offerings. But be warned, not all paths lead to peaceful discoveries. One might bring you face-to-face with the imposing walls of a prison. Another might lead you to an abandoned cistern, a hedgerow maze, and a gazebo with Dai minority influences, all overshadowed by more razor wire. It’s a curious mix of the serene and the unexpected. The broad, paved path back down the hill offers rest areas for those making the climb. Return to the foot of the hill, where the Forestry Police might still be engaged in their card game. Perhaps you’ll join the locals for a picnic amidst the trees. Lianhua Mountain Temple and Heye Shan offer a unique escape, a blend of tranquility, surprise, and a touch of mystery.
