Deep within Higashiosaka, nestled near the Kintetsu Nara Line’s Wakae Iwata Station, discover Wakae Kagami Shrine. This ancient shrine, steeped in mystery, boasts a history dating back to at least 854 AD, as recorded in the Buntoku Jitsuroku, where it’s referred to as “Jukouchi no Kuni Dairaika Myojin Jugoinoge”. Wakae Kagami Shrine’s expansive 2,000-tsubo grounds offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Here, enshrined within the main hall, are three deities: Oiwa-Okami-no-Oi-Kami, Nakatsusumera-Mikoto, and Jingu-Kogo. The shrine’s architecture thoughtfully positions the deity to reflect the gazes of worshippers. Beyond the main hall, explore smaller shrines dedicated to various deities. These include Amaterasu-Omikami Shrine, Inari Shrine, and Kumano Shrine, each adding to the rich spiritual tapestry of Wakae Kagami Shrine. Legend has it that during a time of severe drought, the Mahaprajna Sutra, a treasured artifact of Higashiosaka City, was recited before the shrine. Miraculously, on the fourteenth day, fresh water sprang from the pool behind the shrine, reviving the parched land. This miracle cemented Wakae Kagami Shrine as a source of wisdom, health, and safe childbirth. The current shrine building dates to 1828, a reconstruction after the previous structure was tragically lost to a fire during the Siege of Osaka. Wakae Kagami Shrine played a pivotal role in this historical event, serving as a strategic point in the Kawachi battle between Kimura Shigenari and Ii Naomasa. The battle, a part of the larger Siege of Osaka, witnessed the tragic death of the young and valiant warrior, Kimura Shigenari. He was only 19. Visitors are drawn to Wakae Kagami Shrine not only for its spiritual significance but also for its serene atmosphere. While usually quiet and contemplative, the shrine comes alive during festivals, revealing the passionate spirit of the Kawachi people. Embark on a walking tour from Wakae Iwata Station to delve deeper into the local history. This 3.7 km route takes you past the shrine, Renjosuji Temple, the tomb of Kimura Shigenari, the Yaoko Municipal Archaeological and Cultural Properties Investigation Center, Nishinomiya Shrine, Kasuga Shrine, and finally, Kintetsu Yao Station. This journey immerses you in the rich cultural heritage surrounding Wakae Kagami Shrine, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for its timeless story.
