Osaka’s Ryōseiji Temple. A place where history whispers secrets through the rustling leaves of a willow tree. Ryōseiji, affectionately known as “Yanagi-dera,” or Willow Temple, stands in Osaka’s Nishiyodogawa Ward. It’s a place where the echoes of centuries past intertwine with the present.

Ryōseiji Temple was founded in 1744 by Niccho Shonin, a prominent Buddhist monk. He chose this location, formerly known as Koshokusan, after receiving a divine revelation. The temple’s name, Ryōseiji, was inspired by the posthumous Buddhist name of Shonin’s parents. The willow tree within the temple grounds became a beloved symbol, giving rise to its nickname, “Yanagi-dera.”

Over its 270-year history, Ryōseiji has witnessed periods of prosperity and hardship. In 1801, the temple faced a devastating fire that destroyed its main hall and other buildings. The reconstruction efforts proved challenging due to financial difficulties. Years later, during the Meiji period, the 23rd head priest, Ryūei Jōki, undertook a significant renovation project. He moved the temple from Osaka’s Higashi Ward to the port area, earning it the moniker “Ryōseiji of the Port.” Tragically, another fire ravaged the temple during World War II. The 24th head priest, Ryūmei Jōkyo, oversaw the temple’s relocation to its current site and the reconstruction of the main hall. Today, Ryōseiji continues to serve as a place of worship and spiritual solace, offering various activities like water purification rituals, sutra chanting, and temple tours. It stands as a testament to resilience and devotion, a place where the past and present converge beneath the gentle sway of the willow branches.
