Whispers of emperors and ancient secrets cling to Shogoin Temple. Its history stretches back over 900 years. The current buildings however are much younger. Repeated fires destroyed the original structures. The surviving structures are about 300 years old. Shogoin Temple holds a significant place in Kyoto’s cultural heritage. It’s the head temple of the Honzan Shugen sect. This sect emphasizes ascetic practices.

Shogoin Temple boasts a unique connection to Japan’s imperial family. It’s a monzeki temple. This means members of the imperial family or nobility served as head priests. Emperors Kokaku and Komei found refuge within its walls. This happened when the Kyoto Imperial Palace burned down. This was during the turbulent Bakumatsu period. The palace burned in 1788 and again in 1854.

The Shinden hall specifically housed Emperor Kokaku. Its more than 100 fusuma sliding doors are a sight to behold. Kano School artists painted these doors. They depict cranes peacocks pine trees and scenes from Chinese classics. Unfortunately many paintings are faded. Unauthorized photography is strictly prohibited. The Shoin or Study Hall also served as imperial chambers during the emperors’ temporary relocation.

The Hondo hall is home to an image of Fudo Myo-o. The temple’s garden is a serene space. Cherry trees and plum trees dot the raked gravel. Shogoin Temple also plays a role in the Kinki Fudo Pilgrimage. It is the 18th temple on this route. The pilgrimage begins at Shi-tennoji Temple in Osaka and ends at Nan-in Temple on Mount Koya.

Beyond the grandeur of the temple itself lies a lesser-known fact. Shogoin’s grounds once housed a thriving confectionery shop. This shop produced Shogoin Yatsuhashi sweets. It operated until 2007. These yatsuhashi sweets were a popular souvenir. The shop’s closure was a significant loss for local businesses. Its sweet treats were associated with a Kyoto delicacy. They were a beloved regional product. The temple’s history is intertwined with the community. Its story is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to resilience culture and faith. The whispers of emperors past still echo within its walls. They invite us to ponder the passage of time and the enduring legacy of Shogoin Temple.
