Did you ever wonder what secrets lie behind the walls of a school? Escola de Santa Teresa, established in 1957, has a rich history waiting to be unveiled. Right here, in the heart of Macau, stands this Catholic school. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the community’s dedication to education and faith. Escola de Santa Teresa was initially created to address the growing number of out-of-school children. The first building, a single-story structure, was funded by Father Manuel Teixeira and local businessman Mr. Manuel Augusto Marques. Escola de Santa Teresa’s school motto, “Diligent, Perseverance, Benevolence, and Love,” resonates within its walls. The school aims to cultivate strong moral character in its students. It strives for academic excellence and encourages a lifelong love of learning. In 1963, the school was entrusted to the Canossian Daughters of Charity. This marked a significant turning point in the school’s history. Sister Maria Rosa Teixeira became the principal. A new school building was inaugurated on April 5, 1963. It was unveiled by Bishop Monsignor Romaniello, who came all the way from Hong Kong. The ceremony was officiated by Bishop D. Paulo José Tavares. The turbulent times of 1966 forced Escola de Santa Teresa to temporarily close its doors due to civil unrest and the subsequent “1-2-3 Incident”. But, it reopened on December 18th, demonstrating the school’s resilience. The school continued to evolve. A second building was constructed in 1968. In 1973, the old campus was demolished. A new five-story building was erected and put into use. This building also offered boarding facilities for students. In 1977, Escola de Santa Teresa applied for and received approval to become a private school. It joined the Free Education School Network in 1995, a significant milestone for Catholic education in Macau. In 2006, extensive renovations modernized the school facilities. This transformed Escola de Santa Teresa into one of the best-equipped primary schools in the area. Even today, Escola de Santa Teresa continues its mission. It provides quality education, nurturing young minds and fostering a love for learning. As you stand before Escola de Santa Teresa, take a moment to appreciate its enduring legacy. Remember the dedication and hard work of those who shaped its history.
