Twenty-four kilometers. That’s the breathtaking length of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. We stand here gazing at its imposing structure. A marvel of modern engineering. A testament to human ingenuity.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link isn’t just a bridge. It’s a bridge-tunnel system. It connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan two major cities. They sit on opposite sides of the Pearl River Estuary. Before this incredible feat of engineering. The journey took a grueling two hours. Now it’s a mere thirty minutes.
Imagine the challenges. The sheer scale of the undertaking. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link involved digging a 6.7 km long tunnel. This was followed by the construction of nineteen bridges. Their combined length stretches 43 km. The longest section of bridge alone is 22.5 km. A staggering 15.5 km of this bridge floats above the sea.
Construction began in May 2017. It concluded in June 2024. The total cost reached a staggering US$4.83 billion. This massive project isn’t just about speed and convenience. It holds ten world records. This includes the longest span for a fully offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. The highest bridge deck. The largest offshore suspension bridge anchor. The list goes on and on.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is more than just a transportation route. It’s a symbol of progress. It showcases China’s ambition and innovative spirit. It’s a testament to the country’s determination to overcome challenges. It reduces travel times between cities. It provides a crucial link. This improves the overall economic and social development in the Greater Bay Area.
But the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is also a story of perseverance. Shenzhen’s initial bid to be part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge was rejected. This led to the proposal of a separate link in 2008. It was initially shelved. Years later it was resurrected. The final approval came in 2011. The project went ahead against initial doubts and concerns.
The opening day of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link on June 30th 2024 was met with excitement. There were also reports of congestion. The initial traffic volume exceeded expectations. Many drivers experienced delays. Some even chose the Humen Bridge as an alternative route. In the first month. Over three million vehicles crossed the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link.
Today. We stand before a magnificent achievement. It is the symbol of a nation’s relentless pursuit of progress. It is a testament to human ambition. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link connects more than just cities. It links dreams and aspirations. It underscores the indomitable spirit of innovation.
