Clutching steaming bowls of dandan noodles, we find ourselves at Anshun Bridge. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a culinary landmark, a vibrant tapestry woven into the heart of Chengdu. Anshun Bridge, also known as the “Bridge of the Peaceful and Fluent”, gracefully arches over the Jin River. This covered bridge isn’t merely a passage; it houses a bustling restaurant, a popular dining spot for locals and visitors alike. Anshun Bridge boasts a rich history, stretching back centuries. Marco Polo himself marveled at its predecessor during his 13th-century travels, documenting its grandeur in his chronicles. Over the centuries, Anshun Bridge has endured floods and reconstructions, each iteration a testament to its resilience. In 1677, it underwent renovations, connecting Da’an Street to Wannianqiao Street. This two-level wooden structure showcased deity statues on the upper level while facilitating the flow of pedestrians and goods below. Floods repeatedly tested its strength, leading to rebuilds in 1744 and 1746. The bridge saw further transformations in 1949 and 1974. However, the 1974 version met its demise during the 1981 flood. In 1978, recognizing the city’s growing needs, a separate “New Anshun Bridge” was constructed for vehicles at Shierbei Street. But the story of the original Anshun Bridge didn’t end there. As part of the Fu’nan River restoration project in 1996, the damaged bridge was meticulously dismantled. Its reincarnation emerged as a magnificent three-arch replica. This redesign blended historical elements with commercial spaces. The renamed “Anshun Langqiao” now seamlessly integrated a bridge, a building, and cultural and tourism functions. Completed in 2003, Anshun Bridge stands as a symbol of Chengdu’s commitment to preserving its heritage. It is a testament to adapting to the demands of a modern city, embracing the past while stepping boldly into the future. Anshun Bridge is more than just a bridge; it is a living testament to Chengdu’s enduring spirit. It is a place where history whispers through the arches, where the aroma of Sichuan cuisine mingles with the gentle flow of the Jin River, and where the laughter of diners creates a symphony of vibrant city life.
