“Have you ever imagined Beijing’s ancient glory distilled into miniature form? That’s precisely what the 老北京微缩景园, or Old Beijing Miniature Scenic Garden, once offered.

This park, located in Changping District, offered a unique glimpse into the old city. It was about 40 kilometers from the city center. Many travelers on their way to the Ming Tombs or the Badaling Great Wall stopped here.

Back in 1994 a Chinese-American investor created this unique park. 老北京微缩景园 covered 70 hectares. It was divided into three sections. These were the miniature scenic area, the traditional Beijing area, and performance spaces.

老北京微缩景园 featured 136 miniature attractions. They provided insight into Beijing’s culture and history. Constructed at a 1:15 scale, these miniatures vividly recreated the Ming and Qing dynasty capital.

Every detail mattered to the creators of 老北京微缩景园. The inner city, outer city, Forbidden City, city walls, gates, and hutongs were perfectly recreated. Even the door nails and painted details were meticulously crafted.

The park once thrived. In its early years 老北京微缩景园 bustled with activity. Tourists flocked to see the sights. Many film and TV shows were filmed here. Notable productions included “Huan Zhu Ge Ge”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and “Yong Zheng Dynasty”. Eight performance areas showcased opera, martial arts, and acrobatics. They highlighted Beijing’s unique culture and folk customs.

Sadly, the 老北京微缩景园 fell into disrepair. After twenty years, the park became desolate. Models decayed and weeds grew everywhere. There were no visitors.

Why did 老北京微缩景园 fail? The miniatures made of wood and stone were often vandalized. For nearly ten years the park struggled. It lacked funds for proper maintenance.

After 25 years, 老北京微缩景园 faded from memory. Many people had never even heard of it. The park’s decline seemed irreversible. Now, only faded photos and stories remain.

The main scenic area recreated Ming and Qing Beijing at a 1:15 scale. The arrangement matched the city’s historical layout. Visitors could see Yongding Gate, Zhengyang Gate, and the Forbidden City. The Temple of Heaven and Jingshan Park were also represented. Structures like the Daqing Gate and Chang’an Left Gate were carefully rebuilt.

Even the colors were accurate. The Forbidden City’s roof used yellow glazed tiles. The paintings under the eaves were faithfully reproduced. The number of door nails on the palace gates matched reality. Tiny figurines populated the streets and walls.

Another section recreated old Beijing shops, restaurants, and tea houses at 1:1 scale. Here, visitors could witness mock Qing dynasty wedding ceremonies. Shaolin martial arts were performed. Acrobats and lion dances entertained the crowds. There was even a recreation of an old-time amusement park.

Though closed and decaying, 老北京微缩景园 remains a testament to a bygone era. It reminds us to cherish the parks we have today.”
