Across the street from Narashino City Sodegaura Nishi Elementary School, a small fenced enclosure holds a secret. This isn’t just any elementary school. Narashino City Sodegaura Nishi Elementary, also known as Sode Nishi, is unique in all of Japan. Established in July 1967, Sodegaura Nishi Elementary began a tradition in 1968 that continues to this day: deer keeping. The first deer, a buck named Taisuke, arrived on campus, and soon he was joined by other animals. Imagine children arriving at school, not just to books and lessons, but also to the gentle gaze of deer. The school even has a special deer house, built in 1971 and renovated in 1990, a testament to their commitment to these animals. Over the years, Sodegaura Nishi Elementary has seen its share of triumphs and challenges. The student population peaked at 1,388 in 1976, but has since dwindled to around 190. The school has celebrated sporting victories, mourned the loss of beloved deer, and even weathered the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The gymnasium, thankfully reinforced just before the disaster, served as a shelter for the community. Through it all, Sodegaura Nishi Elementary has remained a vibrant part of Narashino City. The school continues its unique tradition. It provides a nurturing environment for its students. It serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most enchanting stories are found in the most unexpected places. Who would have thought an elementary school would be home to a herd of deer? Sodegaura Nishi Elementary, a place where education and nature intertwine.
