What if I told you this building is more than meets the eye? Today we explore the Comprehensive Cultural Service Building in Shenzhen. This building isn’t just a structure. It’s a vibrant hub connecting community life.

Completed in 2019 this building addresses Shenzhen’s need for public space. The architects at ZHUBO DESIGN faced a challenge. How do you create ample public space on a small plot? Their innovative solution was to build up not out.

The Comprehensive Cultural Service Building stands tall at the intersection of Guangzhou-Shenzhen Highway and Shangchuan Road. It integrates diverse facilities. These include a cultural activity center a community service center and transport stations.

Let’s delve into the building’s unique design. The ground floor hosts origin and terminal stations. Community services occupy the second and third floors. The cultural center spans from the third to sixth floors. An outdoor activity venue sits on the roof. Parking garages are in the basements.

The architects conceived a “box” concept to maximize space. A squarish plot of approximately 3300 square meters posed a challenge. About 2800 square meters were dedicated to transport stations. This left only 500 square meters for public activities. The design stacks functions vertically within a 24-square-meter box. This creates more public space in a vertical dimension.

Imagine a “corridor” weaving through the building. Inspired by Chinese garden paths a ramp corridor circles the structure. It connects urban space transport services and the cultural center. This creates a three-dimensional public space at various elevations.

This corridor serves multiple purposes. During work hours it provides access to community services and the cultural center. When closed it becomes a public activity space for residents. This design fosters community engagement.

Consider the building’s facade. The “forest” design uses a 3D perforated board. This intersects with surrounding urban woods integrating the building with its environment. The double-layer structure reduces noise and shades sunlight reducing energy consumption.

The Comprehensive Cultural Service Building embodies integration. It merges transport community services and cultural activities. It maximizes limited space through innovative design. The building enhances space recognition. The Comprehensive Cultural Service Building interacts with its urban surrounding. One Box One Corridor One Shadow One Forest One building One city.

It is one of Shenzhen’s more interesting buildings.
