Across the flowing Jiangxi River, the Jiedao River Bridge arches like a futuristic harp. This bridge, also known as Chengdu West First Bridge, isn’t just a crossing. It’s a statement. Completed in 2023, it’s a vital link between Chengdu’s Tianfu International Airport and the heart of the city. The Jiedao River Bridge stands as a testament to modern engineering and design. It’s the first of a series of bridges planned along Chengdu’s West Line Road. This road will eventually form the western part of the Airport New Town ring-road, accommodating both cars and cyclists. The bridge itself caters to pedestrians and cyclists as well. Its design, by Zaha Hadid Architects, is striking. Two steel arches rise from either side of the deck, leaning inwards to meet at the crown. This distinctive shape not only creates a visual landmark, but also reinforces the structure against strong winds. The Jiedao River Bridge spans an impressive 295 meters, with a central span of 185 meters. The secondary spans stretch 55 meters to each riverbank. The arches themselves reach a height of 30 meters, tied at their base by longitudinal box girders along the road deck. This ingenious feature helps to distribute the load and minimize stress on the foundations. Remarkably, no foundations were placed within the river itself. Instead, intermediate piers support the arches from each riverbank. The bridge’s construction involved prefabricating steel sections and concrete panels off-site. These were then transported and assembled using mobile cranes, ensuring a swift construction process. The Jiedao River Bridge showcases an innovative blend of form and function. The flowing curves of its arches and supporting structures echo the meandering Jiangxi River below. This creates a dynamic and harmonious relationship between the bridge and its natural surroundings. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in modern architecture and engineering. The bridge seamlessly integrates into the Jiangxi River ecological axis, connecting with the landmark Future Science and Technology City Exhibition Center. It forms a gateway, enhancing the natural beauty of the area and creating a vibrant, multi-faceted landscape. Once the West Line Road is fully completed, the Jiedao River Bridge will play a pivotal role in improving traffic flow. It will further enhance connectivity within the Airport New Town. This bridge is more than a connection between two points. It’s a symbol of Chengdu’s forward-thinking approach to urban development and a stunning addition to the city’s skyline.
