“Too simple” I thought as I stood before it. This is the Ming Shaowu Emperor and his ministers’ tomb. It is located in Guangzhou’s Yuexiu Park.

Ming Shaowu Emperor Zhu Yujian and fifteen of his ministers are buried here. This includes Su Guansheng. The tomb was originally located north of Guangzhou. It was on the northern slope of Xianggang Mountain.

In 1954, construction led to its relocation. It was moved to Muk Hill in Yuexiu Park. In 1981, it was moved again. It found its final resting place by Nanxiu Lake in the park.

The tomb faces west. It has an overturned bamboo shape. A stele stands in front. The inscription reads “Tomb of the Ming Shaowu Emperor and His Ministers”.

The upper part says “Winter of 1883”. The lower part says “Renovation by Guangdong Gentry”. In March 1963, it became a protected cultural site. The tomb is an ancient burial site.

Let’s step back in time. The late Ming Dynasty saw Zhu Yujian in Guangzhou. He established a court in 1646. His reign was called Shaowu. But the Shaowu court lasted only 40 days. Qing soldiers destroyed it.

Wang Xing was a general. He fought against the Qing army. Yongli Emperor appointed him to defend Guangzhou.

In 1952, Wang Xing’s tomb was found. It was in Henan, Guangzhou. The tomb had an inscription. It contained Wang Xing and his wives’ ashes. They were moved to Muk Hill in Yuexiu Park.

Back to Shaowu Emperor. He was the last Ming emperor. He refused food from the Qing army. He said he couldn’t face his ancestors if he did. Zhu Yujian then hanged himself at 43. He became the last emperor to commit suicide.

After Shaowu’s death people mourned him. They collected his remains. They also gathered the remains of Su Guansheng. They buried them together north of the city. That area was near Liuhuahu. It became known as the “Ming Shaowu Emperor and His Ministers’ Tomb.”

In 1954, the tomb moved. Guangzhou built a stadium. In 1981, it moved again. It was placed by Nanxiu Lake. The tomb has been renovated. It stands as a city-level protected relic.

Standing before Ming Shaowu Emperor and his ministers’ tomb offers a quiet moment. A moment to reflect on history. Think about loyalty. Think about sacrifice. The story of the Ming Dynasty lingers here. It is a reminder of Guangzhou’s rich past. A past filled with emperors and brave generals. A past that deserves to be remembered.
