From its humble beginnings in wartime China, the 成都纺织高等专科学校 (Chengdu Textile College) has woven a vibrant tapestry of education and resilience. Imagine the scene in 1939. The nation is at war. Resources are scarce. Yet, amidst this turmoil, the National Central Technical College is born. This institution, the precursor to today’s Chengdu Textile College, faced immense challenges. It moved six times, changed affiliations numerous times, and even temporarily stopped enrolling students. The college’s journey mirrors the turbulent times it has endured.
The Chengdu Textile College has witnessed firsthand China’s tumultuous 20th century. From its initial founding during the Second Sino-Japanese War to its growth amidst the economic fluctuations of the 1960s, the college persevered. It even weathered the Cultural Revolution, a period of immense social and political upheaval. In 1955, after several relocations, the college settled near Chengdu’s Jiuyanqiao area. This marked a period of relative stability and expansion for the institution. New facilities were built. The campus expanded. The educational environment improved. The college became the Ministry of Textile Industry Chengdu Textile Industry School.
The reform and opening-up era brought a wave of revitalization to Chengdu Textile College. It regained its status as a dedicated textile institution. The college embraced modern educational practices. It expanded its offerings and even ventured into cross-province enrollment. The 1990s saw further growth. The college acquired 120 acres of land in Huipu, setting the stage for an even larger campus. This expansion addressed the growing student population and reaffirmed the college’s commitment to providing quality education. It even adopted the more prestigious name of Chengdu Textile Higher College.
In 1999, Chengdu Textile College embarked on an ambitious project: the construction of a new campus in Huipu. This marked a significant turning point in the college’s history. The new campus offered a significantly larger space and more modern facilities. By 2007, the entire college had relocated to this new campus, leaving behind its old Sanwayao site.
In recent years, Chengdu Textile College has continued to flourish. It became a National Demonstration Higher Vocational College and even established a new campus in Qionglai. This expansion reflects the college’s ongoing commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the textile industry and its students. From its wartime origins to its present-day prominence, Chengdu Textile College stands as a testament to the power of education and the enduring spirit of its community.
