Whispers of eternity. That’s what Okunoin feels like. This isn’t just a cemetery. It’s the largest in Japan. More than 200000 souls rest here.

Okunoin is a sacred Buddhist site. It’s on Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture. It’s culturally significant. It houses the mausoleum of Kukai. He founded the Shingon school of esoteric Buddhism. People believe he’s still alive. He’s in an eternal meditative trance. He waits for Maitreya the Buddha of the future.

Imagine walking the two kilometer long path. It’s a sand walkway paved with cobblestones. It winds through a forest of tall conifers. Many of these trees were planted in 1012 AD. These trees are Cryptomeria and Chamaecyparis. The path leads to Kukai’s mausoleum. Thousands of lanterns line the path. Some have burned for over 900 years. Pilgrims donate them. They are lit in perpetuity.

The cemetery holds the graves of monks and feudal lords. There are also modern corporate tombs. One was built by Konosuke Matsushita. He founded Panasonic. It is a testament to the enduring connection between this sacred space and the lives of the Japanese people. Other monuments stand out. There’s even a memorial for termites killed by an extermination company. Another depicts a Saturn V rocket. ShinMaywa Industries built that one. It’s a striking contrast to the ancient serenity of the site.

The path ends at Toro-do. This is the main hall of worship. It stands before Kukai’s mausoleum. You cannot enter the mausoleum. It is strictly a sacred space. But the hall itself is breathtaking. In 1984 50000 statues were donated. This marked the 1150th anniversary of Kukai’s burial.

This place is truly mesmerizing. The mix of ancient history and modern tributes is unique. Okunoin is a place of peace. It’s a place of reflection. It’s a place where history and spirituality intertwine. You’ll leave Okunoin changed. You’ll carry its whispers of eternity with you.
