“A rope-laying,” they called it. This is how Tsunashiki Tenmangu Shrine got its name. We are standing before the 綱敷天満宮神社 Stele in Kyoto. It marks a place linked to the revered Tenjin-sama.

Let me tell you about Tenjin-sama. He was Sugawara no Michizane. He lived from 845 to 903. Michizane was a nobleman a scholar and a politician. He lived during Japan’s Heian period. People recognized his intellect early. He rose quickly in the imperial court. He excelled in academics calligraphy and poetry. Today people see him as the deity of learning culture and arts.

Despite his success in Kyoto Michizane faced political trouble. He was exiled to Dazaifu in Kyushu. He traveled by ox cart and boat. He spent his final years in poverty. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine stands over his gravesite. The shrine was built where the ox stopped. It carried his remains.

Over time Michizane’s character was re-evaluated. He was deified as “Tenman Daijizai Tenjin” or Tenjin-sama. Dazaifu Tenmangu is the head of about 10000 Tenmangu Shrines across Japan. The city center of Fukuoka has an area called “Tenjin.” It is directly linked to Tenjin-sama. Michizane is said to have first landed in Hakata. Several places in Fukuoka remember his journey to Dazaifu.

Here at 綱敷天満宮神社 Stele we see a lasting tribute. Tsunashiki Tenmangu Shrine is believed to mark Michizane’s first landing point. The area was once a harbor. It became his first resting place. Local fishermen used ropes from their boats. They created a makeshift resting area. The shrine’s name “Tsunashiki” means rope-laying. The area’s name “Tsunaba” comes from this act.

Imagine Michizane weary from his travels. He steps onto Kyushu soil. Fishermen offer him a place to rest. They lay ropes for him to sit. This small act of kindness is remembered today. The 綱敷天満宮神社 Stele stands as a reminder.

Let us appreciate the history and culture that surrounds us. The 綱敷天満宮神社 Stele is more than just a stone. It is a symbol of enduring respect and remembrance.
