Dating back to the late Kofun period this site holds secrets. What whispers do the stones of 継体天皇陵 域内險塚 車塚 hold?

継体天皇陵 域内險塚 車塚 is a significant burial mound. It offers insights into ancient Japanese history. The name 継体天皇陵 域内險塚 車塚 translates to “Kurumazuka”. Legend says this is the place where a car carrying Emperor Kinmei’s coffin was stored.

This is a “Zenpo-Koen-Fun”. It is a keyhole-shaped tomb that was common in that era. Such tombs were often reserved for overlords and the highest-ranking people. This shape indicates the owner recognized someone as their king.

継体天皇陵 域内險塚 車塚 dates back to the late Kofun period. This places it around the mid-6th century. This was a time of significant change and cultural development in Japan. The tumulus stretches about 46 meters. The rear round part has a diameter of about 24 to 32 meters. It stands 9 meters high. The front square part is about 18 to 23 meters long. It is about 39 meters wide and about 8 meters high.

Both the rear round and front square parts are built in two tiers. You can see the stones that once covered parts of the mound. Cylindrical pottery lined the slopes.

The burial chamber is a “horizontal cave style stone room”. Its form remains well-preserved due to past restoration efforts. The interior is open to the public each year.

Inside, a stone coffin rests against the back wall. This “assembled house-shaped stone coffin” is quite remarkable. It was built with assembled andesite slabs. This material was mined from the Nijo Mountains. These mountains lie on the border between Osaka and Nara.

Look for protrusions on the base stones. These protrusions are called “string-hanging protrusions”. They are believed to have been used to suspend ropes. This would aid in transporting the heavy stones.

Artifacts from the site tell us much. Horse harnesses and glass ornaments were found. Fragments of metal crowns, weapons, and earthenware were also discovered. These objects suggest the tomb belonged to someone closely tied to Emperor Kinmei. He built the Otokuni Palace in the first half of the 6th century.

Imagine the scene during construction. Workers carefully placing each stone. Craftsmen creating intricate burial goods. This site provides tangible links to Japan’s past. It allows us to understand the beliefs and social structures of the Kofun period. The artifacts offer glimpses into the life of a powerful figure. This person had close ties to the imperial family.

継体天皇陵 域内險塚 車塚 stands as a reminder of ancient traditions. It highlights the importance of burial rituals. It connects us to ancestors who shaped Japan’s cultural identity.
