Beneath the eaves of the main hall, whispers of history echo at 経王寺. I will share some fascinating stories about this temple.

経王寺 is a Nichiren Buddhist temple in Kyoto. It was founded in 1597. A priest named Nichii transformed Ryogonji Temple. Ryogonji was originally a Shingon Buddhist temple.

Later, in 1602, Kyogoku Takakazu supported 経王寺. The temple then moved to its current location. Takakazu’s wife, Kyochi-dono Myoren-nisshin, used it as a family temple. Her grave is behind the main hall.

Kyogoku Takakazu became the lord of Miyazu Domain in 1622. Between 1615 and 1644, he developed the temple town. The temple town includes Kanayadani and Ogawa areas. It is also said that the temple moved to its present location at that time.

Many temples were built in the temple town. These include Kakushoin Temple, Kokuseiji Temple and Keisho Temple. Also, Daitsuji Temple, Butsumoji Temple and Honmyoji Temple were established there. Furthermore, there were Kenzeiji Temple, Shinshoji Temple and Kakushinji Temple.

The main hall was constructed in 1843. It was rebuilt in October 1845.

The highlight of 経王寺 is its main hall. It was rebuilt in 1845. The hall features the Kyogoku family crest on its ogre tiles. The crest is a “flat quadrangle.” Wada Heizan painted a cloud dragon on the ceiling. He was an artist from Miyazu.

There is a memorial tower. It commemorates those who died during famines in 1836 and 1837.

経王寺 enshrines Daimandara as its principal image. This temple is a testament to faith. It is also a place of remembrance.

As you explore 経王寺, remember its origins. Envision the temple town. Picture the cloud dragon. Feel the weight of history.
