Have you ever heard of a playhouse made of bamboo? Right here in Kuala Lumpur’s Perdana Botanical Gardens, you’ll find the Bamboo Playhouse. It’s a unique structure designed by Malaysian architect Eleena Jamil. The Bamboo Playhouse isn’t just a children’s play area. It’s a public pavilion, a place for quiet contemplation, and even a venue for events and exhibitions. Imagine relaxing in a hanging bamboo basket “tree-house,” overlooking the tranquil lake in the heart of the gardens. The playhouse sits on a small island in this lake, further enhancing its peaceful atmosphere. The design is inspired by traditional Malaysian “wakafs,” communal resting places. The raised platforms of varying heights create a three-dimensional floorscape. These platforms, along with the tree-like columns supporting the roof, blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The Bamboo Playhouse demonstrates the versatility of bamboo as a sustainable building material. It’s a striking example of contemporary architecture, shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival award in 2015. The Bamboo Playhouse is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering a unique experience for visitors of all ages. In 2020, a small bamboo library was added to the grounds. This micro-library, also designed by Eleena Jamil, provides free books, primarily for children. This addition coincided with Kuala Lumpur being named the World Book Capital for 2020 by UNESCO. The Bamboo Playhouse is more than just a structure. It’s a testament to sustainable design, a playful space, and a tranquil retreat within the bustling city.
