“A journey across three nations,” a wise monk once remarked, “culminated here, in the presence of the 立像釈迦仏安置 Stele.” The 立像釈迦仏安置 Stele, an unassuming stone monument, holds within its inscription the echoes of a journey that began in ancient India. Listen closely, and you might hear whispers of King Udayana, a devout follower of Buddha in the 5th or 6th century BC. He, struck by grief at Buddha’s passing, commissioned a statue to capture his likeness. This statue, known as the Udayana Buddha, became an object of veneration for Buddhist followers.

Centuries later, a Japanese monk named Chonen, on a pilgrimage to China, encountered a meticulously crafted replica of the Udayana Buddha. Recognizing its significance, he brought it back to Japan. He dreamt of building a temple to house this sacred relic, a temple that would become Seiryoji Temple. Chonen, sadly, passed away before his vision could be realized. His brother, Seison, took up the mantle, ensuring the temple’s completion and the enshrinement of the Udayana Buddha replica within it. The 立像釈迦仏安置 Stele commemorates this profound moment, marking the final resting place of a statue that travelled from India, through China, to find a home in the heart of Kyoto.

Look closely at the stele. It tells a story not only of geographical distance but also of cultural exchange. The inscription, written in ancient characters, speaks of devotion, loss, and the enduring power of faith. This unassuming stone before you is a silent witness to the flow of Buddhist teachings across continents, a testament to the power of art to transcend time and connect us to the past. The journey of the Udayana Buddha, as embodied in this stele, serves as a poignant reminder that even in stillness, there is movement, and even in silence, there are stories waiting to be told.
