Whispers of ancient devotion echo through the trees surrounding the Dabei Temple. Here, nestled on Xishan Mountain in Beijing, this sacred sanctuary has honored Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, for over a millennium. The Dabei Temple’s Shanmen Hall greets you with a vibrant display of colored bricks, white granite, and grey tile roofs. Notice the intricate “100 birds paying homage to the phoenix” painted on the exterior wall. This design speaks to the temple’s revered status. Emperor Kangxi himself bestowed the name “Dabei,” meaning “great compassion,” upon this temple. He even had it inscribed on a granite piece, forever linking the temple to the royal lineage. Look closer at the gate. Elephants, lions, dragons, and even flying goats are carved into its surface. Above the doorway, three enigmatic gods are etched into the stone. The central figure, a human face with a beak, represents the mythical roc. The flanking figures depict the Kui dragon and honeysuckles. Inside the Shanmen Hall, the Maitreya Buddha, a symbol of future enlightenment, greets you with a warm smile. Flanking him are the fierce Four Heavenly Kings. These contemporary statues add a modern touch to this ancient space. Venture further into the first courtyard. You’ll find the Mahavira Hall, home to the Buddha of Trinity. Eighteen clay arhats, disciples who have achieved enlightenment, stand guard. These remarkably preserved sculptures, created in 1298, capture a range of emotions. They smile, meditate, dance, and sleep, each with a unique expression. The artist, Liu Yuan, even scented these figures with sandalwood and fragrant sand. Legend claims he crafted many of the sculptures found in Beijing’s temples. His talent earned him high praise from Yuan Dynasty emperors, who even gifted him two royal maids. Centuries later, a faint fragrance still clings to these remarkable works of art. Remarkably, they survived the Cultural Revolution, a testament to their enduring power. The courtyard is a haven of tranquility. Lush bamboo, even flourishing in winter, and carefully cultivated bonsai trees create a serene atmosphere. Two towering gingko trees, estimated to be 800 years old, stand sentinel behind the main hall. These trees, symbols of uprightness and dignity, are a traditional addition to Buddhist temples, their golden leaves mirroring the monks’ robes. The Ming Dynasty Dabei Hall houses the compassionate Guanyin, the heart of this sacred space. The recently renovated Yaoshi Hall, dedicated to the Buddha of Medicine, reflects the architectural style of the Qing Dynasty. Twelve camphorwood deities, gilded with gold foil, stand on either side, embodying healing and well-being. Finally, behind the temple, a shallow trench filled with wild red begonias marks the site of a former hot spring. Legend tells of two golden mules who once drank from its waters. A greedy farmer attempted to capture them, but the powerful creatures dragged him to his death. Today, two mule-shaped rocks lie in the valley, a silent reminder of this cautionary tale. The Dabei Temple stands as a beacon of compassion and resilience. Its history echoes through the centuries, inviting you to connect with the enduring spirit of Buddhism.
